Wisconsin Bishop David Ricken opened the cause for Sainthood for Adele Brice on January 30th, 2026.

Adele Brice (1831–1896), a Belgian immigrant to Wisconsin, US, was the only seer to witness apparitions of the Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Champion, in 1859. Based on the account told by several sources who worked with Adele personally, Adele first saw a lady all in white standing between two trees while possibly on her way to the grist mill. Adele was frightened and stood still. The vision slowly disappeared, leaving a white cloud.

The following Sunday, October 9th, while on her way to Mass in the company of her sister Isabel and a neighbor woman, the lady in white once again appeared to Adele between the same set of trees. After Mass, Adele related her experience to her confessor who said that if it were a heavenly messenger, she would see it again, and it would not harm her. He also counseled her to ask in God’s name who it was and what it desired of her.

On her way home from Mass with two companions, Adele saw Our Lady for a third time. As they approached the hallowed spot, Adele could see the beautiful lady, clothed in dazzling white, with a yellow sash around her waist. She had a crown of stars around her head. Adele fell on her knees, saying, ‘In God’s name, who are you, and what do you want of me?”

I am the Queen of Heaven who prays for the conversion of sinners, and I wish you to do the same. You received Holy Communion this morning and that is well. But you must do more. Make a general confession and offer Communion for the conversion of sinners. If they do not convert and do penance, my Son will be obliged to punish them.

“Adele, who is it?” said one of the women. “Oh, why can’t we see her as you do?” said another, weeping. “Kneel,” said Adele, “the Lady says she is the Queen of Heaven.” Our Blessed Lady looked kindly at them, saying,

Blessed are they that believe without seeing.

Then Our Lady asked Adele,

What are you doing here in idleness while your companions are working in the vineyard of my Son?”

“What more can I do, dear Lady?” asked Adele, weeping.

Gather the children in this wild country [U.S.] and teach them what they should know for salvation.

“But how shall I teach them who know so little myself?” Adele said.

Teach them their catechism, how to sign themselves with the sign of the Cross, and how to approach the sacraments; that is what I wish you to do. Go and fear nothing, I will help you. [1]Source: championshrine.org

Our Lady lifted her hands as though she were beseeching a blessing for those at her feet. Slowly she vanished from sight, leaving Adele overwhelmed and prostrate on the ground, and the dense woods as solemn as before. When Adele got up, she immediately went about fulfilling this mission.

She spent her life teaching the catechism to children, devoted to the mission Our Lady gave her to teach people what they need to know for their salvation.

In opening her cause, Bishop David Ricken explained, “We believe and I declare worthy that Mary, the Queen of Heaven, appeared to Adele and shared her wishes for her to educate the children in this wild country. And she spent her whole life fulfilling that mission.” During his 18 years in the diocese, he said he had heard “countless stories of the life and virtues of Adele.” It is for this reason that he was motivated to further a study of Adele’s life and open the cause for her canonization.

Referring to his request for people to submit testimonies about Adele at the end of 2025, the Bishop said, “I have received dozens of stories since the December 28th release of the edict that have confirmed my conviction to open this cause.”

Fr. John Girotti is serving as the Episcopal Delegate (Bishop Ricken’s representative) for Adele’s cause as it enters the diocesan phase. He explained that a tribunal will be formed during this phase. [2]Source: aleitia.org
